If it's got spaceships, dragons, wormhole generators, wands, or any kind of flying—I'm on it! I love sci-fi and fantasy (for any age), but I'll read anything, particularly the satirical, unconventional, bold, thought-provoking, historically accurate, geek-related, or tech-oriented.

Title: This Book Will Not Be FunComments:
This book will NOT be fun. Trust me, it won't. Nothing can make fun happen here. Not weird creatures, not colorful dance parties--NOTHING! Well... except for maybe... YOU!Reminds me of the silly ways a loved one can get you to stop being grumpy! Also great for kids who might think they prefer safe & quiet to trying something new. (AND for the kids who get a kick out of storming up fun!)
A great read-together book.

Snyder has managed to not only shape a stunning story, but also open her readers' minds to the truths of every childhood. As we follow Jinny's progression from stubborn certsainty to uneasy uncertainty, we find ourselves asking the inevitable questions that come with growing up: why does change happen? Is change good or bad? Did I cause it? Can I undo it? Can I ignore it? Does change affect everyone the same way? What comes next? Is it okay to not know? Is it okay to not be okay?Terrifically gripping. Fascinating. Simple and wise. Perfect!

Title: Gilded CageComments:
A fascinating blend of New York Times bestselling series "Red Rising" AND "Queen of the Tearling," this book manages to be both an in-put-downable, breathless, exciting story of revolution and resistance, AND a quiet, thoughtful meditaqtion on the effects of power, wealth, and all of the difficult moral problems that arise when attempting to fight oppression.
Honestly, this book could have been 300 pages longer and it still would have felt action-packed and thought provoking.
Great fun! Stay tuned for the sequel!

Title: HeartlessComments:
An incredibly well-done portrayal of how the maniacal head-chopping Queen of Hearts came to be. When you begin reading this, it seems wholly impossible that the hopeful, optimistic, kind baker you're introduced to will one day become that cold-hearted living terror. The story ensues, filled with silly adventure, a true mystery, delectable food, maddeningly clever Alice in Wonderland references, a love interest to rival all loves, and so much more, slowly but surely shaping her. This is not only an exciting page-turner, it is eye-opening: Who could you become depending on the circumstances? Are there really bad versus good or sane versus crazy people? Or do all the little things that happen to fall one way or another accumulate to bring out those attributes? To leave us... heartless?

I am so glad this story is finally being told, in all its fantastic, gory, poignant details.

Title: Letters of Note, Volume 2
Comments:
This is really extraordinarily delightful!
Keep this book on your coffee table and entertain and learn from.
These letters, memos, and notes would never be seen otherwise--and they're always hilarious or remarkable! It's like going through the attic of an incredibly worldly and well-connected grandmother!
Some personal favorites: Ursula K. LeGuin's fabulously worded refusal to blurb a book (page 146), Hunter S. Thompson's foul-mouthed rejection of Anthony Burgess's 50,000 word novella (page 188), and the indescribable anti-social memorandum found on page 86 which describes all of us, some of the time.

Title: ScytheComments:
I woke up one night at 2 am and, unable to fall back asleep, picked up this book thinking it would aid in that endeavor. That was simultaneously one of the worst and best decisions I've made in years--I didn't go to sleep until 7 in the morning because the book turned out to be so good!!! Neal Shusterman does what he does best, and what makes him one of my all-time favorite authors: delivers an irresistibly engaging page-turner of a story which simultaneously discusses serious, meaningful, thought-provoking subjects. The fun and dark balance each other to such perfection that people of any age could read his work and get different things out of it. In Scythe, Shusterman tackles the meaning of life and death when neither exist naturally any longer, and, of course, which shusterman it's not just about the superficial problem-- the main characters adventures make them have to think about human nature, good and evil, power, corruption, human rights, and more. Un-freaking-believable how amazing this was. Is. Forever will be. Read it!!

Title: They All Saw a CatComments:
We all see the cat... but are we all seeing the same cat? An incredibly simple yet powerful book on perspective. This lesson can apply to pretty much everything in life and it also doubles as teaching tool for animal vocabulary! The change in color tone also makes for a fascinating experience and even discussion for those learning about colors. A book so good that it's hard to believe it hadn't already existed before! A must-have for any new child's library.

Title: The SnurtchComments:
I have a Snurtch. We all have Snurtches, but some of us have bigger ones than others. This is a wonderful tale that will help children who may have ADHD or other behavioral issues see that they are not alone with their problems, that they're not inferior, and maybe even help them learn to cope with them. This is not an instructional book, however, and that's to it's benefit--every child will enjoy following along with this fun and silly story and be entertained as well as learn from it-- what more could you want from a great picture book? Highly recommend.

Ada wrote the first computer program, AGES before computing even became a thing. To make her story even more remarkable, you'll learn that she was a teen, she had spent years crippled, and she was a woman in the early 1800s-- all things conspiring against her. But she was smart, eternally curious, had an encouraging parent, and never gave up. I can't think of a better role model for girls today!
This book is beautifully illustrated and written in a way that will engage and inspire kids of many ages.

Title: Rat QueensComments:
Rated M.
This is awesome! Wiebe & Upchurch did EVERYTHING right:
1. Characters: These are some well-rounded characters. They're seriously bad-ass women, but each realistic, unique, fully realized and the very opposite of the tired one-dimensional "strong female protagonists" we're all sick of. These ladies are legit, with compelling back stories, and personalities that make you want to keep finding out more!
2. Plot: A great mystery and adventure all wrapped up in one.
3. Style & Tone: This is what makes this graphic novel series really fully unique. It's funny, it's crazy, it's weird, it's mysterious. The D&D satire is SPOT ON (but still fun even if you're not familiar with RPG).
4. Illustrations: Damn. Beautiful in every frame, masterfully manipulates the eye to go just where they want it to, but the illustrator's talent really shines through when you get sucked into staring at an incredibly expressive portrait of a character's face. Amazing.
Bonus: The leading ladies are sexy, but in a way that clearly shows that they own their bodies and clothing and make their wardrobe choices of their own volition, rather than the illustrator putting them into whatever the male gaze would prefer. They're also shaped both realistically and in varied ways. Both very uncommon these days in comics. Well done, guys.

Title:Sleeping GiantsComments:
This is exactly what I want from a book. If I had to sum up all the things I find coolest and most fascinating and thought-provoking, I would just hand over this book and beg you to be careful with my soul. This terrifyingly timely story has everything from run-ins with North Korea and Russia, mysterious government machinations, private corporate ruthlessness, ethically questionable medical advancement, and, perhaps most importantly, the militarization of new and little-understood technology.
As the plot unravels its excellently executed mystery and draws out the true selves of the incredibly compelling characters, you'll be nodding at every seemingly small, rational, understandable step taken until you put the book down then suddenly stand back in horror wondering how you got to this point. Are we humans doomed to create our own destruction— even when we seek to create or discover something wonderful, will we inevitably use it to decimate?
This unique, original, smart, and thrilling tale will leave you questioning your very own morals... and waiting with bated breath for book 2!

This is a hell of a book.
When I first picked it up and realized what it was about, I got very concerned-- how could you pull of a novel of a school shooting without coming across as voyeuristic and insensitive? Well, read this book and you'll have your answer.
I can't possibly adequately explain just how well done everything is in this book-- story, characters... just everything! No matter what kinds of books you normally read... this timely tale truly is a must-read.

This story nixes everything you ever thought was questionable about the Cinderella tale (getting married after 1 date? Seriously?), and inserts everything you ever wanted and didn't even know you wanted (Being a genius mechanic who uses her own wits to save the prince? Title: Night Watch (and ALL Discworld books!)Comments:
This is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE novels (which is part of one of my all time favorite series: Discworld, that has no set order by the way so begin anywhere!)
This is the height of satifical fantasy. Terry Pratchett became famous and beloved for imparting wise and worthy social commentary via spot-on, laugh-out-loud humor, unique and personable characters, and plots with great mysteries. His tone is NEVER pedantic or grim. Every human living in modern day society will finding themselves grinning, nodding, laughing, and falling in love with the contents of Pratchett's work.
Seriously-- give it a shot!!!If you want to know more about this particular novel, here goes:
Vimes, night watch copper in the quintessential CITY, Ankh-Morpork (and my favorite character), goes on his best adventure. Get ready for time travel, revolt and rebellion, ethical quandaries on police authority and brutality (something that will make an especially interesting read in these times), roof-top chases, mysteries within mysteries, and a fantastic wink and a nod to Les Miserables.
How many times have I read this book? I've lost count... but it's definitely time for another re-read. Oh Joy!PS- the audiobook narrators (there have been 2 for all the different books) are excellent, and I highly recommend listening to these for audiophiles!

Title: His Majesty's DragonComments:
This was both the sweetest and most hardcore fantasy book I've ever read. It's war time, and duty, no matter how brutal the consequences, comes first. But it's also British society, with propriety, proper breakfasts, and casual scholarship that prompts wonderful thoughts and conversations about sense of self.
Temeraire and his captain occupy a special place in my heart- a place never before granted to a dragon and a military officer. I am absolutely thrilled that this is a whole series, and I expect Novik's follow-ups to be just as enchanting and engaging!
PS- I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the fantastic Simon Vance, and HIGHLY recommend audiobook fans to seek it out! The voices for the two main characters are sublime.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this beloved children's author writing what looks like a humor book on chocolate- which doesn't sound terribly original an idea does it?
Well this book is AWESOME! LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY, the text and illustrations work together to perfection.
AND this book actually does contain an insane amount of factual info on, well, chocolate!
The PERFECT gift for ALL chocolate-lovers EVER.

Title: Carry OnComments:
This book has made it into the hallowed halls of my favorite books of ALL TIME- something that hasn't happened in many, many years (and I read A LOT).I was grinning by page 14, laughing by page 34, gasping by page 48, and after that I stopped looking at the page numbers because I was flipping pages like a madwoman bent on death by paper cuts.
Rainbow Rowell (that genius of a woman behind the highly acclaimed and beloved bestsellers, Fangirl and Eleanor & Park) spins athrilling and sweet story perfectly balancing her usual unique yet realistic and relatable characters and funny and thrilling story line with an utterly supremely intelligent parody of Harry Potter tropes, references smartly placed where HP fans will laugh and slobber over them, yet non-HP fans won't even notice them. This is a book for one and all! Fantasy lovers and real-life book enthusiasts (and kids and teens and adults) will fall in love with... well, EVERYTHING about this story.
Unforgettable. Love, love, love. (Okay, now excuse me, I need to go reread it.)

Title: You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)Comments:
I didn't pick this book up thinking I'd Staff Pick it—but after devouring it all in one six hour sitting (and finding myself hugging the book to my chest like a little girl discovering a new best friend), I just had to, expecially because it's so readable, so accessible, that both those who are already fans of Felicia Day AND those who know nothing about her or her geeky, techie world will enjoy (and learn from!) her story.
In it, she chronicles her life, from her bizarre homeschooled education and detrimentally poor socialization to dealing with the issues of (to name just a few) identity, mental illness, creativity, procrastination, & self-esteem, that most young (and even not so young) adults must learn to navigate, for better or for worse. Thankfully, Felicia Day's story turns out to be the "for better" variety, and she tells that story with a great humor and earnestness that had me laughing out loud and relating (even though we had very different upbringings and personalities) every step of the way!

Title: ZeroesComments:
I WANT TO BE A ZERO TOOOOO!!
At first it was their joke, these kids with "powers"- things they could do, but couldn't explain, things that were a big deal... but not really in a good way. They're not superheroes, they're not bad guys or good guys, and the things they can do... do they cause more harm than good by using them? They're not heroes... they're just "zeroes".
At least, that what's they think- until one of their own lands in deep, deep trouble. Can they pool their resources to help each other- without hurting anyone else??
If you liked Steelheart, you'll love this (and vice versa). Thanks, Westerfeld for another awesome story with realistic characters, and a great touch of mystery... can't wait for their next adventure!!

Title: The Library at Mount CharComments:
"It's about to be very dark you see."
Oh, was this good.
Picture the best kind of movie made by some awesome mix of Guillermo del Toro, Quentin Tarantino. and the Coen brothers, with their soul-gripping eerienes, dark humor, creative storytelling techniques, viscerally real (yet fantastically unique) characters, and mind-warping weirdness to get this absolutely deliciously subversive allegorical story in the thematic tradition of Neil Gaiman.
You'll be absorbed by characters fantastically both lovable and despicable as they unravel the ingeniously spun black threads of mystery that show us the macabre beauty lurking behind the truths of human nature.
A startlingly good debut novel—I'll be waiting anxiously for his next unquestioningly superb book!

Title: Between the World and MeComments:
It's not my words, my Dreamer-swathed words, my words glossy with layers of whitewash, that matter here. It is his words that matter. That matter so, so much.
So please read them. I know it's hard sometimes to pick up a nonfiction book, a hardcover book, a "literary" book, a book that you feel you "should" read. It's easier to grab the hottest new thriller, or the next in your current mystery series, or your favorite author's latest novel, I know. But not only do his words carry the shackled and shot weight of centuries and generations, but they are also richly, darkly, sublimely, entrancingly, just so, so good.
This is the book that matters, and this is the book that is good.
This book, then, is everything. Everything you need to read. Right now. Please, please, please.
Read this.

It didn't take long for me to become a diehard Sanderson fan. And after reading this second installment to his EPIC Stormlight Archive (read The Way of Kings first), I can completely understand why he was the lucky author chosen to complete Robert Jordan's classic Wheel of Time series after his death.
Sanderson weaves and unravels mysteries like a pro, truths shifting like sand beneath your feet with every word uttered, eloquent and rivetting. His characters are so alive, so utterly human, that you can't peg anyone with the old fantasy stereotypes like villain or hero or (thank god) damsel in distress- they are all uniquely and simultaneously wonderful and terrible. And, somehow, this is a 1300 page page-turner. Seriously.
Trust me, pick up any one of this author's books—and you'll be hooked for life too.

Title: Fortune's Pawn (& the whole Paradox trology!!)Comments:
I read this whole 3 book series in one breathless week. It's such a wonderful series; reminiscent of the TV show Firefly and the book series The Expanse by James S.A. Corey. Badass woman, badass love story, badass government/alien conspiracy mystery. Light & serious at the same time. Seriously, it's the perfect addicting page-turner you want to read. I'd also recommend jumping on it now rather than waiting for "next time" because it has very limited availability. Hopefully the publisher will choose to reprint, but if not... you're going to want to grab one of the last copies!!!!

Title: UprootedComments:
I'm a hardcore book lover—that much should be obvious. So usually, I argue that books are wonderful, flawless creatures that bring us nothing but good—joy in entertainment, excitement in adventure, and enlightenment in learning. But this book made me a terrible person—not because it didn't have all those things but rather because it possibly has too much of those things. It was so good I could do nothing until I'd finished it! I ignored loved ones and cancelled plans. I lived for two days in a beautiful valley under the shadow of a sinister and mysterious wood and became the closest of companions to the Russian folklore inspired—and inspiringly real yet badass—characters. I was caught up unfailingly with every plot twist and snatched ravenously at every new mystery perfectly unravelled, piece by tantalizing piece. So, I (and the dozens of incredible authors giving the same testimonials on the back of the book) am giving you fair warning: This book is so good, it just might make you terrible. Because once you enter these woods... no one comes out unchanged.

Title: This is SadieComments:
This is Sadie. I love Sadie. She is my new role model—a precious place occupied mostly by Madeline up until now.
Beautiful illustrations, words, thoughts. And look at the inside (reverse side) of the dust jacket—a perfect poster for any kid's (or, let's face it—adult's) room.
Love, love, love how sweet, whimsical, and calming it feels though it's full of exciting, imaginative adventures!
Simply a treasure.

Title: NimonaComments:
Nimona has surpassed any vague unfulfilled hopes I ever had for a cool yet relatable female supoerhero. Not that she's really a "superhero"- in fact, she's a "villain's" "sidekick" trying to take down the "hero" of a "benevolent kingdom".
Ahem.
Fall in love with Nimona as Stevenson makes you question everything you ever thought you knew about villains and heroes.
Subversive, funny, mysterious, gripping, beautiful, thought-provoking, and deeply satisfying... this is a MUST READ for EVERYONE!

Title: Cakes in SpaceComments:
I picked this book up because the title made me laugh. By the time I had finished looking at the cover and reading the blurb I was in hysterics.
So I knew it'd be funny- likely a fun little romp- but what I didn't anticipate was how awesome the illustrations would be (perfectly and creatively interacting with the text) and how great the characters and their story would be.
Fun and funny, yes, but also sweet, brave, thought-provoking and SMART!
This is a great read-aloud or beginner book for all kids- AND their adults!

This book will make you want to set out into the forest! Burrow your toes in the dirt, breathe deeply the crisp air, see those bright, in-person colors. So simple, yet so evocative, this is a beautiful, beautiful book.
