If it's got spaceships, dragons, wormhole generators, wands, or any kind of flying- I'm on it! I love sci-fi and fantasy (for any age), but I'll read anything, particularly the satirical, unconventional, or historically accurate.

Title: Wherever You GoComments:
As an avid traveler and explorer, I love how this book, in words and illustrations, perfectly captures both the excitement and thrill and the peace, beauty, and contentment that comes from wandering and discovering new places and people... and from coming back home after a long journey.
This is a great pre- and post-family (or a kid's first solo) trip book!!

Title: The Mime Order (Bone Season #2)
Comments:Having high expectations for a sequel is always chancy, but I couldn't help it! Yet I loved this book *more* than I had expected to and ended up tearing my way through it, gasping and flailing through delightfully deviant plot twists, scarily ominous mysteries, and thrilling action scenes that had my favorite characters fighting not only for their lives, but their very souls, morals, and identities. And let me just categorically state that Paige Mahoney is the most believably badass protagonist I have ever encountered.
Part alternate history fantasy, part political thriller, this dystopian series (which is refreshingly not set in the far, far flung future) will leave you exhilarated and yearning for more... thank the "zeitgeist" The Mime Order is just the second in a planned 7 book series!

Title: Golden Son (Red Rising #2)Comments:Pierce Brown has ruined reading for me. This book (sequel to the equally amazing Red Rising) was so good it hurt. So good I arm-flapped, squealed, and shook my way through it. So good I can't stop thinking about it now that I've finished reading it. It's like I'm living in this zombie limbo stage that feels like no other book will ever be able to revive me out of.
Brown is a king of perfect plot twists, of realistic character development, of intelligent, thought-provoking social commentary. I am beyond excited for the final installment to this trilogy. Mostly because I won't be able to read anything else until it comes out. So, yeah, Pierce Brown has ruined reading for me- but he's left me with one of the most incredible sci-fi reading experiences I've ever had.

Title: Here
Comments:One word. Whoa.
I’m going to have to reread that. Is read the right word though? View. Experience. Follow. Live. I don’t want to re…whatever it because it’s confusing, by the way. No. It’s wonderful. It’s the kind of wonderful that fragments reality, piece by tiny glass piece, so that by the time you close the book it just barely dawns on you that your mind is irrevocably blown. Life has taken on a new depth, it has expanded to include many worlds that you’d never considered before.
This is just so amazing. This is life.

Or have you ever wondered why we think that a person with unbridled power would use it for good? What's the difference between those who become villains and those who become heroes?
This series is putting all those questions to the test with a great cast of characters, nail-biting action scenes, and eerie mysteries. Join The Reckoners as they fight for a better future by trying to figure out what made the world so cruel to begin with...

Title: The Gigantic Beard that was Evil
Comments:This is what a graphic novel is supposed to be. Collins makes the writing and the drawings interact together to create something wholly new, something that would be impossible to express without the two interwoven art forms. And what it expresses is both humourous and wise and relatable to every human who has ever faced that terrifying thing we call change. Dive into this book and prepared to be hypnotized by its lyrical prose, captivating images, and thought-provoking (and giggle-inducing!) story.

Title: The Slow Regard of Silent Things
Comments:Patrick Rothfuss breaks my heart. No, not just because I (along with millions of people around the world) am waiting for the third and final book in his Kingkiller Chronicles. (And if you haven't read the first two of that series, I seriously suggest starting there- we have lots of copies of The Name of the Wind, go read it! Now! Okay, done? NOW you can read this one.)
Rothfuss has written an entrancing, enchanting, ethereal story that perfectly matches the disposition of one of my favorite Kingkiller characters, Auri. To quote Vi Hart, "I felt more of an emotional connection to the inanimate objects in this story than I usually feel toward entire characters in other books." This story was a sweet and dark lullaby, and a few moonlit strings of a mystery left to be plucked at and unravelled, one ominous thread at a time.
Rothfuss fans, you will NOT be disappointed.

Title: Wolf in White Van
Comments:
God. No wonder this was long listed for the National Book Award (2014). This story, this writing, is achingly good- and I mean that unbelievably literally: as I read Darnielle's exquisitely crafted sentences and thoughts I felt a tightness in the center of my chest and my brows painfully knitted together. I was compelled to feel both miserable and elated at the same time; to be both baffled by the character and feel an absolute and implicit understanding of him. This is a novel, but everything in it feels so transcendentally true that it approaches a realism beyond what we usually see and hear- it is about what we feel and don't even realize that we feel. Darnielle expertly weaves the fantasy in our minds with the harsh reality of the decisions we make in the real world and leaves you pondering your own sanity in the process.Seriously. Just read it.

Comments:
When we were kids my brother and I used to spend all day digging a hole when we went to the beach, so I sympathize with Sam and Dave's plight. Title: Not That Kind of GirlComments:
It has been a very long time since I read a nonfiction book so quickly, never putting it on pause for a novel. In fact, I had to stop myself every day from reading too much- I wanted to make this beautiful, crazy book last.Lena Dunham discusses serious events and topics with a passion and humor that had me, to take just one example, laughing out loud as I read a morbidly stunning page on her childhood discovery of human mortality. As I read her personal essays- on body image, love, death, sex, friendship, fear... in short, life- I realized that the person I was learning about (and from!) was truly nothing like me, and yet I still found a piece of myself in every single story, the pieces of me that I share with every young woman, post college graduation, and living in a world where the encouragement "be yourself!" just doesn't seem possible.

Older kids and teens will appreciate the wonderfully humorous irony employed throughout the mysterious plot. Title: LandlineComments:
I had to stay up until 2am to finish this book. Yes, HAD TO. Because even if I had been able to put it down, my mind and heart would have been racing and twitching all night.I'd heard of Rainbow through her success with Fangirl and Eleanor & Park, and I now know why people gush over her. She creates people so REAL they might as well be sitting next to you, they might as well be your husband, your mother, they might as well be YOU. She speaks with a beautiful, messy wisdom that makes you feel like you're not alone in the world with your ridiculous dilemmas. But that doesn't stop her from being downright hilarious, particularly through her witty dialogue.
So in case you couldn't tell... I'm an official Rainbow convert. And if you pick this book up, trust me, no matter what genre/style/tone you normally go for, you will be too.

Title: The Queen of the Tearling
Comments:Within the first few pages I knew this was going to be one of those books- with beautiful writing that snaps up your attention and refuses to let go until you finish it (and in just a couple of breathless sittings later); with a story line that keeps you guessing and marveling til the end; and with characters that make you laugh and cry with their wit, bravery, and utter humanity.
Princess Kelsea's perilous journey to ascend the throne in a mysteriously cruel kingdom (and world) is as riveting and epic as Kvothe's in Patrick Rothfuss's Name of the Wind- together they are hands-down the best books I've read in the past several years. It's no wonder that the movie rights have already been snatched- starring Emma Watson!
Erika Johansen is without a doubt a fabulous new addition to fantasy cannon, and I look forward impatiently to the day that the sequel comes out!!

Title: Eleanor & Park
Comments:
Rainbow Rowell may be the only author whose work I can devour and love- without the plot containing an ounce of magic... at least, of the wands & dragons kind. Her stories present us with a more subtle and complex magic- that of the real world, with real people, who hurt and love, and must live everyday with who they are and where they must be.This book broke my heart and left me giggling gleefully in turns. To make you feel that to be human is both devastating and miraculously wonderful- that is a magical talent the wise Rowell possesses in spades.
Highly recommended for John Green fans!

Title: Afterworlds
Comments:
This is one of the most unique books I've read in a long time. Get Ready- It's... a YA novel about a girl who writes a YA novel about a girl... !!!The 2 stories, intertwining astonishingly well, give us a sneak peak into 2 very different worlds-that of the young adult publishing and writing scene in NYC (perfect for aspiring writers and avid YA readers who want a behind-the-scenes look at how their favorite novels are made!) and that of a world whose boundaries exist far beyond the event of death (for all you readers who love an awesome fantasy twist!).
The characters are realistic, yet strong and witty. And the love story? Best one I've read in ages!

Title: The Storied Life of A.J. FikryComments:
Oh, Gabrielle Zevin! You have won a lifelong, heartfelt fan with this one.I had read an earlier work of hers entitled Elsewhere as a child/young teen and it stayed with me forever. This story proves no less memorable with its easy, graceful, and casually humorous tone that perfectly matches the wonderfully rich story of life that is presented.
A MUST-read for all lovers of books & bookstores, of readers & writers, quite simply, of people & places. This is a story to savor as you sink into its deliciously welcoming pages.

Title: Quesadillas
Comments:
If you want laugh-out-loud funny satire, gorgeously written- this is IT,. Plus, you'll even learn a thing or two along the way- like about...economics - "We were all well aware of the national ecomony due to the fluctuating thickness of the quesadillas... we'd even invented categories- inflationary quesadillas, normal quesadillas, devaluation quesadillas, porr man's quesadillas..." (9)
or religion- "'Don't be stupid. The Virgin doesn't know about analogue signals,' my uncle said firmly, based on the conjecture that the Virgin lived a long time ago, before the advent of electronics, and suggesting, heretically, that celestial beings are not omni-know-it-alls." (96)

Title: Ready Player One
Comments:
I read this book in 1 day- in 1 sitting. The only time I even ate anything was when a character mentioned "popping some corn" and I suddenly HAD to have some popcorn to accompany this movie- I mean video game- I mean book! This is a MUST READ for anyone even remotely interested in any of the following: science fiction tv and movies (old and new); the evolution of computers, the internet, and gaming; vintage video games (yeah, Zork!) and modern MMO and RPG styles; technology's impact on society; 80s pop culture and music...
Need I say more to convince you how great this book is? And even if you're not familiar with any of that stuff, it'll still be an enjoyable and stimulating read with great characters, great moments of tension, and great twists set in a disturbingly plausible dystopian future.
Overall, I had great moments of nostalgia, learned a lot, was highly entertained, and amassed a small list of old scifi classics I must peruse immediately.

Comments:
For the first 100 pages, I thought, "okay, this is a good book." And then I hit a major plot twist and I started exclaiming aloud, pulling at my hair, and wringing my hands. Next thing I knew, it was 11:45pm and I was closing the back cover of the book, breathless and heart hammering. What a ride!
Just Trust Me-
Don't even read the blurb (it actually ruins a major plot twist), just read the book. Because, as the author so confidently (and, as it turns out, accurately states:
You're going to bloodydamn love this book.

Comments:
After I turned the last page of thise book, I looked up, stunned. I started flipping pages randomly, exclaiming, "wait- was that real?? Or not real?!!" I immediately turned to Google to find out more about the author and the million things about which she had just taught me... japanese culture (ijime, educational system, Tokyo, religion...) and history (Hiroshima, tsunamis, Kamikaze...), zen buddhism, quantum physics, philosophy, geological science... whew! I can't believe I learned so much from such an engaging piece of fiction!Ozeki weaves a dream-like story of 2 very different lives intersecting- reader and writer. And who creates whom...??

Title: The Rithmatist
Comments:
I gulped this book down in a couple of sittings! A well-known (and loved!) king of fantasy proves his mastery at inventing creative, unique, intricate, and fascinating magic systems in every book he writes- and this may be one of the best yet! In this world The United Isles of America are at war with the wild chalklings and Armedius University must dedicate itself to training Rithmatists to fight from childhood- those people that are mysteriously "gifted" with the ability to draw with chalk- and have it come to life! In 2D only, of course. This is an engrossing read with characters that will become near and dear to your heart- the wacky but endearing professor, the sarcastic girl, the smart and daring boy, and the vain and eerie soldier-teacher.I would particularly recommend for those interested in art and/or math, and those who enjoy a good mystery!
I can't wait for the sequel!!

Title: These Broken Stars
Comments:
As an avid sci fi and fantasy reader, I'm used to complex plotlines with millions of half-intersected characters- but this story amazed me for its beautiful simplicity, mostly because, while there are only 2 characters for most of the book, it's still ridiculously engaging. The writing style is wonderful with its subtle humor, great world-building, and realistic character development. Spooner and Kaufman break some MAJOR tabboos (even for sci fi) and somehow pull it off with jaw-dropping grace. Bottom line, the book made me think about it every day while I wasn't reading it, trying to figure out in my own head as if I were one of the characters what was really going on on that eerie planet. It's just such a unique read!

Title: The Golem and the Jinni
Comments:
After I finished this book, I walked around in a daze for days, feeling as as if a hole had been left in my soul where the book had previously been! This is one of those stories that is timeless, though it takes place in 1890s New York and is fascinatingly accurate, yet effortless. The two main characters are mythical representations of two distinct cultures (Jewish and Syrian) that immigrated into New York through Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century. We discover what these peoples have had to leave behnind, what they bring with them, and how they forge their new mixed identities in this exciting and scary new world. It is a magically enthralling (and educational!) read, with well-spun adventure, mystery, and inspiring truths.

Mind TRIP.Not the inaccessibly brainy kind that just makes you feel stupid or annoyed. Not the kind that you want to like because the concept is cool, but just can't get into. - Exactly the OPPOSITE!
This book is pure gold, with dialogue that makes the characters really come to life- uh, literally (...you'll see). Scalzi weaves a story that pokes fun at (while using!) all of the major sci-fi tropes, and then some. If you ever liked sci-fi shows, movies, or books, or, hey, even disliked them, then you won't be able to stop laughing throughout this well-played adventure. Oh, and the ending- will make your day.
Funniest thing I've read in YEARS!

Comments:
So adorable! But Rufus is not only the cutest little pig ever (fantastic illustration work!), but also smart and determined!I liked Rufus's story because it wasn't your typical "child is doing something wrong and by the end learns better" story. Rufus has a favorite story that he desperately wants to read himself but... he doesn't know how to read! (I can relate, having had the same childhood experience!) So Rufus tries to figure out how to be allowed to attend school (he is a piggie, after all!) so he can learn! And, after some very funny struggles... he succeeds!! Go Rufus!

Title: Divergent Series
Comments:
I'm a huge fan of dystopian books and series, from 1984 to The Hunger Games. But no Other story has made me laugh, cry, stare open-mouthed at a single sentence, mull over a thought-provoking concept, or learn about the nature of choices, love, justice, loss, prejudice, honesty- in short, humanity- more than in the Divergent series.Besides being phenomenally gripping and action packed (I finished the first book in one late-night sitting), it is also deeply thoughtful and incredibly wise. This is a series you actually want your kids to read. Even further, this is a series that people of ALL ages can read- to enjoy and to learn a little something of life.
