Linda's Past Picks - 7

So many interests, like so many books, and so little time! That's why non-fiction books are usually my picks, because I try to keep up with my favorite subjects. As I heard once, "Act your shoe size!" We all need to slow down and see what there is to see. We need to reread some books, like Silent Spring. Sometimes it's children who help us grown-ups marvel at the wonders of the natural world, right in our own backyards. Stop and smell the flowers! But a good mystery is always interesting-for the other grey cells!

Orchid Muse: A History of Obsession in Fifteen Flowers By Erica Hannickel Cover Image
$35.00
ISBN: 9780393867282
Availability: NOT ON HAND, but usually Ships in 2-7 Days
Published: W. W. Norton & Company - December 20th, 2022

The bizarre, intriguing, tropical, convoluted or sexual have been adjectives to describe the ORCHID. And it certainly is that and more! It is an ancient plant that has evolved intricate forms to entice particular pollinators in a unique environment. AND it is so specific with timing of the flowers & the pollinators that it becomes critical to reproduction, which is the plants goal.
The author describes the evolution and the human involvement with these unique plants as passions, business, political, social and now even more important, the environmental effects.
The explorer travelling to distant lands & returning with these plants started a craze. The wealthy Victorians, including Queen Victoria & Empress Eugenie, were able to expand their collections. And with that came more science to develop hybrids and lower costs for more enthusiasts.
Names in history who helped in promoting science & plants like: Jane Loudon, a lady of botany who educated women with; Helen Gould (daughter of Jay Gould) who used her knowledge for orchids & working for the welfare of families; Charles Roebling (Roebling family of the Brooklyn Bridge) his orchids & steel cables used for greenhouses and Raymond Burr (remember Perry Mason?) who developed many hybrids-and of course, the Darwin Family.
A modern concern is about the environmental impact on destruction of rainforests & the chain effect with loss of trees, plants, insects & animals which have survived together, WILL have problems for humans as well. Groups are working for preservation & some include artists who can bring the natural beauty to the masses to gain their support.
A glossary & bibliography; all the details of different orchids & their care-especially the 'vanilla' orchid (!), will probably make you look twice at those 'supermarket' plants...and maybe adopt one or check out an orchid society for help.

Empire of Ice and Stone: The Disastrous and Heroic Voyage of the Karluk By Buddy Levy Cover Image
$29.99
ISBN: 9781250274441
Availability: NOT ON HAND, but usually Ships in 2-7 Days
Published: St. Martin's Press - December 6th, 2022

Would you mind wearing animals skins & furs, day & night?
Could you keep your eyes open when night is day for months?
Would you enjoy dining on pemmican, every day?
How many times do you think your fingers & toes could be frostbit?
These are just a few things to consider if you were to join an Arctic expedition in 1913 for scientific exploration. Sponsored by the Canadian government & "organized" by Stefansson with an experienced Captain Robert Bartlett to man the ship "Karluk", the journey begins.
With assorted crew & the science staff, there was enthusiasm & excitement. It was men with varied expertise including skiing (after all, there was plenty of snow AND ice!), a carpenter, engineer, meteorologist, anthropologist, surgeon and an indigenous family who knew how to survive the perilous environment.
Being locked in with the ice was challenging but they did keep their minds & bodies active even playing games & contests on the ice. There were books to read, topics to discuss and everyone kept a private journal. And when the "Karluk" could not withstand the crushing ice, it sunk.
You have to understand the role Captain Bartlett played: he understood their plight & consequences, he prepared the men & supplies for just such an emergency, he kept a positive outlook for the group and he did rely on his hunter, Kuraluk & Auntie, his wife who sewed all the clothing (and taught the men how to sew as well!) to become a survival team.
The book reads a very fast paced adventure/survival story with all the horros of the extreme weather & the minds of men. There are details of travelling on moving ice, using the dog teams, hunting polar bears (even enjoying seal blood soup as food became limited), illnesses & the anxiety of chopping through ice mountains & waiting for nature-to give them a break, praying for a rescue. It may give you chills-for one reason or another...
Captain Bartlett is the hero; but what about Stefansson the organizer? what happens after the rescue & who survived/ Be prepared for non-stop reading!

The Pirate's Wife: The Remarkable True Story of Sarah Kidd By Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos Cover Image
$27.99
ISBN: 9781335429841
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Hanover Square Press - November 8th, 2022

the story of Sarah Kidd, the Captain and the times-late 1600's to mid 1700's and what it meant to be a woman in an unsettled political age in NY & Europe.
She was Sarah Bradley, 14, coming to Manhattan with her father, Capt. Bradley & her 2 brothers from England to start a new life. She learned early about her father's shipping business and caring for a household as her mother had passed away.
That made her well aware of the politics of the times & how she could keep some independence & control of her life. She was married twice, more of convenience than love. Life changed when she met Captain William Kidd and married him for love.
Capt. Kidd was skilled, well-travelled, fair & generous with his crew. Sarah & William could discuss business and their family at the same time. They each had trusted close friends who supported them.
It was all politics in Manhattan & England that changed their lives to one of horror. Capt. Kidd working under orders to overtake enemy ships (French) as a privateer but also acted, under pressure, as a pirate. The story was so unraveled by the sailors and greater lying by the untrustworthy politicians on both sides of the Atlantic, that Capt. Kidd was arrested, suffered thru jails & brought to trial in England with no support for his defense. Sarah was fighting in all ways to get the Captain freed; all her contacts, many of their old friends and appeals to England but in vain...as the Captain was found guilty & executed. Sarah remained hopeful...until she realized she would have to take care of her family first which included her adult brothers.
Sarah did take care of her personal business, remarried & was successful through land holdings & her original household valuables from England. She was a prominent woman who felt all the illnesses & social changes that Manhattan faced; she kept strong to care for her family, her goal. There was some inheritance from her & the Captain but there may have been more 'elsewhere'!
Wonderful story of life in the times about two extraordinary people & love.

although she wasn't welcome since locals felt the land trust (who sent her, wouldn't let them hunt on the land. But she did make a few friends which put some changes in her life.
Her job was to set up game cameras & other devices to find wolverines, an endangered species in those mountains.
she is adjusting but WHO was really a friend and why was someone out there to kill her! and is there a Sasquatch???
Natural history, illegal transporting & hunting of 'non native animals'-and the drama of local law enforcement make this a challenge.
Lots of action & information and the setting is definitely rough. Good to read from a chair-by the fire!

Title: Nose Dive: A Field Guide to the World's Smells

Comments: That flexible appendage in the middle of our faces has an extraordinary job.
You don't see all those flying molecules of scents BUT the nose knows!
McGee combines his humor, scientific research, and narrative to show us what is out there; why things (food and 'other') smell the way they do, and tries to answer WHY and HOW!
There is history -- evolution and creation all combined. His term for this study is "osmocom". There are formulas to study here (but not necessary) but the 'WHY' is divided into sections and THAT is FASCINATING!
Why does parmesan cheese smell like pineapple??? which came first??? these molecules were here before anyone with a nose evolved!
Take your time & just pick your food, herb, flower or stinky thing and maybe find out why it smells that way.
Great fun for gardeners, cooks-and public health people...

Title: Voyage of Mercy

Comments: The potato famine in Ireland was causing massive starvation for millions. And there was no help from England.
At this time, 1847, US was at war with Mexico BUT because so many Irish immigrants came to the US, everyone learned of the tragic times.
And then, Young America came together-all peoples, all areas, rich & poor-to start shipping food & supplies to Ireland. It was our first humanitarian effort supported by all!!
Author Puleo gives the background, the personalities and describes the harshest conditions known.
US and Ireland, to this day, share a special bond.
Great history & extremely moving action packed voyages...

Title: No Man's Land

Comments: When the going gets tough, the tough get going. In this case-WW1 in Europe & the suffragette movement. Two women doctors decided to do their part AND prove a point: women doctors CAN handle war injuries & trauma. Flora Murray & Louisa Anderson set up the first hospital in France taking in all kinds of injuries. Many of these were new German weapons like chlorine gas & shrapnel wounds.
Their success continued into more facilities-the latest & biggest was Endell Street Hospital in London.
AND these hospitals were TOTALLY run by women.
This book is their story.  But very much part of WW1 damage in France & London, military politics and the nature of war affecting everyone...
