Title: The OverstoryComments:
If you want a book that will shift how you view the natural world and our role in it then this book serves that purpose. It is part a history of the logging industry and part our emerging consciousness for our dependence on trees for our very life. We follow the stories of many characters and their unique and individual response and relationship to the earth and all that happens in their lives. The characters are deftly portrayed with complex cross-cultural lives. But this book is even more than that--packed with new ideas and imaginations for a new understanding of our planet and our role in its evolution.

Title: Roll with ItComments:
What's it like to have to go to school in a wheel chair? What's it like to have to navigate the world differently? Well, if you are 12 year old Ellie--then you've got it handled. She is a passionate and determined young girl with a penchant for baking, letter writing and making the best of things. Her challenges are not just her physical disability (she has cerebral palsy)--her life seems to begin falling apart when she hears that she and her mom will be moving to another state to help her grandmother. Things look really bleak until Ellie starts making her first ever friends. Her upbeat attitude and resilience move this story along, making a great read.

Title: Born a CrimeComments:
Maybe you are picking up this book because you know Trevor Noah from "The Daily Show" and would like to know more about him--or it's because you are intrigued by the title. You won't be disappointed for either reason. He is a great storyteller--painting a colorful picture of his childhood in South Africa with hilarious details and a sobering overview of the history of apartheid (apart-hate.) His mother models for him how to navigate the system without drawing too much attention to himself--truly a matter of life and death. It is a page turner even though we know the ending. He holds nothing back.

Title: A Discovery of WitchesComments:
This romantic fantasy reads almost like historical fiction: the "characters" are so developed and real--despite the fact that they are witches, vampires and daemons. Currently there are numerous books about witches and vampires--could this be that we seek imaginations for what could lie behind reality? This romance about human "creatures" helps us see the "other" as being more like us than different, as well as being a spell-binding (no pun intended!) love story. It is the first book in the "All Souls Trilogy" and recently adapted into a TV series.
