If it's Wednesday, I must be at The Bookloft - not the greenhouse, not leading a field trip, not at Naumkeag and not doing trail work on the AT!
So many interests, like so many books, and so little time! That's why non-fiction books are usually my picks, because I try to keep up with my favorite subjects.
As I heard once, "Act your shoe size"! We all need to slow down and see what there is to see. We need to reread some books, like Silent Spring. Sometimes it's children who help us grown-ups marvel at the wonders of the natural world, right in our own backyards.
Stop - and smell the flowers!
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Hardcover)

Title: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Comments:
Writing with compassion and a thorough sense of the scientific implications, Ms. Skloot unravels the mystery behind the "HeLa" cells. In Virginia, in the 1950's, if you were black the only medical facility that would treat you was Johns Hopkins. But that was a last resort - folks felt that they may never be able to leave or that they would be experimented on.
Henrietta had to make that journey with her diagnosis of cervical cancer; and here begins the story of the "cells."
Henrietta's cancerous cells were removed (for research purposes) without her or her family's knowledge. These cells, nicknamed HeLa, have been reproducing and aiding research around the world for over 50 years. They have been involved in Polio, HIV, and cancer research - to name a few - all of tremendous importance.
But what about the family? To Henrietta's family, with their limited knowledge of the science, this became another exploitation of Black folks.
Through ten years of learning about HeLa and winning the confidence of the Lacks family, Ms. Skloot has brought justice to this issue. The profound emotions of Deborah, Henrietta's daughter, have brought Henrietta the person - mother, friend amd sister - to a new understanding of what it is to give of oneself... A truly remarkable read!

This book is a special treat, especially for those that enjoy British comedy as seen on PBS.
you can picture the scenes and the antics of all the characters as they go about their 'doings' in the village. The characters are delightful. There is intrigue! A touch of romance and much laughter round out this uplifting story.
With a 'spot of tea,' served with a real mug of course, you'll be brought to terms with family, sons, religion and race. But remember to enjoy the tour of the village via the people!
Some of the Major's words of wisdom:
-"He is medically allergic to children."
-"kids eat the icing off cupcakes and put them back on the platter naked and disolving with spit!"
-"People spend so much time and energy on the adverse judgment of others."

Medical Mystery? Romance? WWII? Family Issues? Spies? Big Business? Scientific Research? I hope I have all the subjects covered!
Fast paced with WWII history in NYC and the ruch for penicillin "for the war effort." Belfer blends all the subjects together in a moving and emotional book which brings you into this historical drama.
It makes you wonder how the medical "industry" manages the research and funding, plus the difficult decicion with treatments.
Historical references are present throughout and the NYC connected with the Rockefeller Institute brings it all close to home.

She didn't start out on a boat (although she loved the hands-on projects with her family). And then she became the engineer of a fireboat and her little 'tuglette'.
Jessica is a wonderful writer who blends in the "today" with the "yesterday" of ships and the Hudson River.
The working tradition of the Hudson, changes along the waterfront, the lost art of navigation, and the craftsmanship and diversity of old technology are smoothly integrated into this lovely memoir.
There are also the personalities involved in the boat-to-person relationships and Jessica's own trial by fire, so to speak, with the fireboat she learns to engineer; the 9/11 experience and the tug boat the preservationists purchase.
Preservation of the old things - boats, buildings, tools - are all partof this story.
Learning the old methods, keeping a physical record of the past and all the challenges it presented will help us learn to deal with new and future challenges. History gives place and soul.
The Hudson was, and still is, so much.

Mystery lovers! - Move on to Boris Akunin!
But! only if you like ever-changing plots, extraordinary characters (good and bad guys), unusual incidents (not your run-of-the-mill murder cases!) set in late 1800's Russia.
Akunin is very popular is Europe and you may guess why, but who knows? Nothing is clear but you'll be in an historical mystery with so much activity that you might leave the experience exhausted.
Have no fear, there is romance, mischief and fun. You'll have to concentrate since the writing is descriptive, graphic and flows with classic verbage.

Remarkable - a 12 year-old girl in the early 1800s can find, clean and understand fossils! Not only that, but survived being hit by lightning!
The shores of Lyme Regis were being eroded and washed away, uncovering bits and pieces of the prehistoric past. Mary knew where to look and helped her family through hard times by selling specimens to tourists. One such woman became Mary's close friend and they were catapulted into the scientific spotlight with one of Mary's finds.
It's a story about discovery, friendship, family and a highly knowledgeable woman who became a a part of the patriarchal scientific community. A fight to be sure...
1830-1850s were interesting times; science and religion, geological discovery; fossil hunters and collectors - the world was changing.
This is based on a real person, Mary Anning, who became so knowledgeable and skilled a paleontologist that she made great and lasting contributions to science.

Title: Rewilding the World
Comments:
Do not be afraid! Large predators evolved with humans and they learned that humans are nasty predators themselves...
Rewilding is not a new concept. Aldo Leopold talked about it in 1949, and it has recently resurfaced. Basically, vast corridors of land are set aside to help species survive. but how do you get poorer countries to set aside land when they need it for food?
This becomes a scientific and a social issue. Ms. Fraser takes you around the world to meet unique animals and people, and their situations where inspired leaders, creative financing and grassroots efforts can make a difference.
This is just to slow extinction rates; man needs to re-engineer our own habits and consumption because all species are intertwined. Many interesting concepts are explained and animals' lives explored within.

His examples are detailed and sometimes graphic; but he makes us imminently aware of what wonders human can achieve.
I could make a list of a few key words/guides for making lists: knowledge, necessary steps, team work & communication, accomplishing specific tasks but also able to adapt to complex situations - like Wal-Mart's role in the Hurricane Katrina disaster (Good Job, Wal-Mart!).
Why the list? Get things done quickly, efficiently and safely. But it also leaves room to act and adapt to unexpected or unpredictable situations.
Of course, Gawande brings this method to medical practice, especially with the ER and surgery. These are life-or-death situations that can become extremely complicated. With a basic list of procedures, even the W.H.O. international health organization can help doctors and their patients to survive.
Gawande is a remarkable writer - and I suspect an incredible doctor!

A complicated personal and historical tale which may bring your emotions to boil!
But, such was NYC in the new 1900's - working girls, rich men, freedom but sufferings...
Evelyn's story was made famous in the movie "Girl on a Red Velvet Swing" and more recently in "Ragtime."
Stanford White, the great architect, and Harry Thaw, rich playboy looking for revenge, were both tied into Eveyln's life. She was the face for many products - Fairy Soap, Coca Cola, etc. And she became the one to suffer humiliation and betrayal.

You hope going to the doctor will make you feel better - but that is not always the case!
Dr. Gawande, on the front line (so to speak), discusses issues in the medical field - some old, some new. His perspective on war, cleanliness, salary and legal action, the death penalty - to name a few - are from a doctor's point of view.
His writing is as engaging and emotional as these issues can be. Health care is a hot topic. Gawande tries to dissect and explore these dilemmas, as a doctor and as a human being. There are always felings involved and the 'do no harm' motto.

Since Rachel Carson exposed pesticides as a bird threat, the public was/is/should be aware of chemicals. These "canaries" are still threatened (remember their great migrations) by more chemicals, deforestation, bright lights and tall buildings, habitat destruction and even your kitty cat!
Stutchburg explains it all and makes suggestions on how we can make a difference. After all, we too are like "canaries" on this caged Earth!

Title: An Irish Country Village
Comments:
Patrick Taylor first charmed readers with "An Irish Country Doctor," a warm and enchanting novel in the tradition of James Herriot and Jan Karon. Now Taylor returns to the colorful Northern Ireland community of Ballybucklebo, where there's always something brewing beneath the village's deceptively sleepy surface. Young Doctor Barry Laverty has only just begun his assistantship under his eccentric mentor, Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, but he already feels right at home in Ballybucklebo. When the sudden death of a patient casts a cloud over Barry's reputation, his chances of establishing himself in the village are endangered, especially since the grieving widow is threatening a lawsuit.
While he anxiously waits for the postmortem results that he prays will exonerate him, Barry must regain the trust of the gossipy Ulster village, one patient at a time. From a put-upon shop girl with a mysterious rash to the troubled pregnancy of a winsome young lass who's not quite married yet, Ballybucklebo provides plenty of cases to keep the two country G.P.s busy. Not all their challenges are medical in nature. When a greedy developer sets his sights on the very heart of the community, the village pub, it's up to the doctors to save the Black Swan (affectionately known to the locals as the "Mucky Duck") from being turned into an overpriced tourist trap. After all, the good citizens of Ballybucklebo need some place to drink to each other's health...
Whether you've visited in the past, or are discovering Ballybucklebo for the first time, "An Irish Country Village" is an ideal location for anyone looking for wit, warmth, and just a touch of blarney.

Absolutely absorbing historical tale of humanity where you'll meet "Uncle Wiggly Whigs"!
After WWII, Berlin was divided between the 4 Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, U.S., & Soviet Union) to rebuild the city.
But the Soviets mere "moving" in Europe & wanted Berlin too. Politics not fighting was this next conflict as the Soviets put pressure on the 2,000,000 Berliners, survivng the devastated city, with the Blockade. No supplies were to get through; Berliners barely survived, *Berliners mere determined to resist the Soviets because they wanted freedom & democracy at any cost.
U.S. military had mixed feelings (hard feelings after WWII but quite a change afterward) of how much effort they should expend- lose Berlin, may lose all of Europe.
So an Airlift was started and under new leadership by Tonner, it became like clockwork like the planes dancing.
The remarkable Candy Bomber who defied regulations, dropped the parachute candy packages to children, became the miracle worker who brought all the chaos into international eyes.
At this time, 1948-49, Truman was running for election, politics was hot & the stubborn Soviets were unrelenting. The basic moral issue- let the Berliners down OR continue Airlift, America made a choice & in her glory, came through.
Month by month action with issues, tensions & people (including Bob Hope) make this an emotional read.
AND this was the start of the Cold War-----

Title: The Life & Times of the Thunderbolt Kid
Comments:
Gosh, Oh Gee, the 1950's - the age for dreaming!!
When kids were indestructible - no seatbelts, no helmets - there were heroes (like Roy Rodgers), TV was new and cars were "way out." Then came the "invasion of teenagers," the Cold War and Communism.
Bryson will review the wonders of Dick & Jane, Silly Putty, Lincoln Logs & Mr. Potato Head!
What a wondrous and humorous view of growing up in the 50's Bryson takes us on. How many of you can relate to that?!
It's at least a laugh per page.
As he moves forward in time small farms and towns disappear, the "last of something really special." Keep the memories.

The Chicago Exposition, 1893, had to top the Paris fair. America was going all out to "out-Eiffel, Eiffel" (tower man). Buffalo Bill was there; Olmsted had quite a challenge designing the landscape. Mr. Ferris finally was able to present his "wheel".
So much history, so well presented - like an intriguing mystery. And behind these workings was a psychopath doing his dirty work in the neighborhood. Now that's another story!

Well, as a person in the 1700's, all of these issues would have been a daily discussion. But, if you saw Dr. John Hunter, you might (more likely) be on the road to full recovery from your ailments.
John Huinter's life story with the medical/social history of the 1750's-1800's in England, is an engrossing (and perhaps gross, too) tale. Comments:
Although you will see fantastic, some first time recordings, photos of tiny creatures, we know little about "them". Those invertebrates, who seem unknown ( we think they are unworthy of our study!), are such a big part of our world. They are what keeps us together AND we are learning medical & survival strategies from "them".
These exquisite creatures exist in some of the harshest areas, live as communities & have adapted over millions of years. What about "us"? Man seems to destroy as he moves along. It's sad, we may never know all life on earth.

I can only give a few thoughts that Ackerman related through this story:
- Bond with nature - Why humanize animals and animalize humans? - Ways to transcend pain - Perpetuate goodness in the midst of inferno - Mindful chores - Some word to touch humanity leads to hope for the future.
One had to cope with the constant bombings, "guests" (Antonina and Jan were part of the 'underground forces' as well as the scientists who ran the zoo), and fear of the Nazis.
There is much detail about how the residents of Warsaw survived at the beginning of WWII and through it all. References to the science of animal genetics played a big part in the German story, strange ideas to be sure.
This book is certainly about family strength and survival.
