If it's Wednesday, I must be at The Bookloft - not the greenhouse, not leading a field trip, not at Naumkeag and not doing trail work on the AT! So many interests, like so many books, and so little time! That's why non-fiction books are usually my picks, because I try to keep up with my favorite subjects. As I heard once, "Act your shoe size!" We all need to slow down and see what there is to see. We need to reread some books, like Silent Spring. Sometimes it's children who help us grown-ups marvel at the wonders of the natural world, right in our own backyards. Stop and smell the flowers!

Title: Midnight in Peking

Comments:

Investigative reporting at its best! Paul French uncovers a cold case: 1937 Peking, China, a bizarre and brutal murder of a young English woman, Pamela Warner.

One story is of her father's unfailing search for her killer and another story, which becomes part of the search, is China's changing political atmosphere. Harsh times with nationalists, communists, and now Japan all anxious to take over China. This became part of the problem for the murder investigation. The English, Scotland Yard and local Chinese police had shifting allegiances. Suspicions were on everyone but would the local residents tell all?

A sad story with all the emotions of life and death. Thanks to French, the entire episode is brought to light - to solve that murder in 1937 (with all of Pamela's father's personal investigations). A wonderful historic read for this time period.

Title: Love, Fiercely

Comments:

More than just romance between Newton Stokes and Edith Minturn, it's an entire era of change in Gilded Age New York City - and the Berkshires, too. Jean Zimmerman blends so much of life (rich and poor) the art (Sargent), the families, women's rights, tenement commission, Olmstead with Central Park and business into a comprehensive tale.

Newton Stokes was "possessed" with collection everything about early New York or New Amsterdam. His monumental work Iconography is still referred to in NYC history.

Edith, called Fiercely by her brother, was an activist and model for Daniel Chester French.

This book is so filled with their lives and loves and the changes that were occurring that you can feel the emotion. Wonderful read for the lover of history.

Title: The Discovery of Jeanne Baret

Comments:

What possessed Jeanne Baret, common herb-woman, to disguise herself as a man to accompany her lover, a naturalist on board a ship to circumnavigate the world?
PLANTS!

And what a curious group: two ships of Frenchmen with scientists aboard ready to search new lands for plants and animals for profit. Sound familiar? This was in the 1760's.

It is a remarkable journey for you, the reader, since Ms. Ridley uses the world history, scientific advance (at that time), and the role and taboos of women that push Jean (and Jeanne) to extremes.

She was the one who collected and organized all of the samples. What happened to her during that voyage? What did Jeanne do afterwards?

Ms. Ridley has done a wonderful and thorough job researching and blending all the big and little tidbits of "interesting" facts to make a fast paced read!

Title: Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey

Comments:

Many of us have become fans of the PBS series "Downton Abbey;" the visual display of life in a castle and the stories of family and staff - but what is even more astounding is the REAL family stories (same castle, Highclere).

Almina became the Countess of Carnarvan at 19 years old in the Victorian Age, late 1800's England. But her story is not all parties - she became instrumental in changing Highclere Castle into a modern hospital during WWI. She was on the front lines, so to speak, of care for injured soldiers.

Her husband was also different. He and his friend, Howard Carter, explored Egypt and found King Tut's tomb.

The story is an adventure bot also brings in history, social class, and individual passions. The current Countess of Carnarvon blends it all together in a great read to accompany your Downton Fever!

Title: Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil

Comments:

If you've been enjoying the "Irish Country" series, you will understand Fingal just a little more. He is quite a character/doctor that we know. His student days in medical school certainly made the man; funny, thoughtful, and truly compassionate. And there are the qualities for good bedside manner (although at times we wonder about his maturity!) for a doctor.

That's about Fingal. But Fingal is looking at the whole picture of health and well being, 1930's: after wars, lack of good housing, lack of jobs and public health.

Should he specialize or become a G.P. on the front lines? We know. And his close friends have remained so through the mischief, the exams, and the life afterward. And thanks to Kinky for the recipes again!

Comments:

I, too, have been on that "Greater Journey" thanks to Mr. McCullough.

From the 1820s to 1900 you will take that long sea voyage to Paris from Boston or New York. In Paris, the Americans became a part of a new way of life and learning, because that is why Americans came - to learn art, sculpture, medicine, writing or resting.

Stowe, Remington, and American Indians, and many more because McCullough has kept pace with time and history developments which bring wonder and passion to this time period. Title: The Death Instinct

Comments:

A bombing on Wall St. - September 1920 - would be just the beginning of the mystery, investigation, politics, and terror from NYC and into Europe.

Rubenfield blends the intricate past/present personal lives of his characters into a fast paced historical drama.

As the police investigations begin with the Morgan Bank and the US Treasury, there is the city and national politics changing - who do you believe? The past, WWI, will become as involved as the three main characters: Dr. Young, detective Littleman, and mysterious Colette move through the leads of solving more than one problem.

This historical period brings Freud and Marie Curie into the picture. There is the psychology and the term "shell shock" becoming part of understanding the veterans. And the business of radium uses - other than what Curie was promoting - treating cancer. An engaging drama of history and character!

Title: Destiny of the Republic

Comments:

Political intrigue; medical mishap; madness; inventions; Dr. Lister - and all relating to the beloved new President Garfield. In office for only four months, this is a story of not only this man and the incident, but the 1880's also.

Garfield was a Civil War general, farmer, loved learning and people. He was shot, but not killed, by Guiteau, who had his own story.

You'll learn of the strength of Garfield, his family, and staff who kept up hope for his full recovery - and the American people who identified with this man.

The politics were brutal and the medical care was a trauma in itself. But it was a time when different factions pulled together. The Vice President made a change around in his ideas and influence.

But more than all this, it was an emotional read about a man you grew to understand and love in a turbulent time.

The medical drama is wretched.

Title: A Trick of the Light

Comments:

Author Louise Penny, a Canadian writer, is up the scale in "whodunnits"! She was a journalist and radio host on CBC for many years, which has given her special insight into people.

A Trick of the Light is the 7th mystery with the charming and understanding Inspector Gamache. Police headquarters in Quebec, but it seems most of the stories take place in the small town of Three Pines.

This town has an extraordinary community of characters (different lifestyles, professionals, artists) who show the spectrum of emotions. And there is a murder to solve.

Penny appreciates the community - entertainment, releif, laughter, happiness, and stress - and brings the modern investigation from Quebec to Three Pines.

You'll want to meet these people (if you could), have a croissant (which they have often) and speak French - Oui? And investigating is thorough and sensitive with Gamache and Jean Beauvoir, his assistant.

Perhaps you should start at the beginning with Still Life or an earlier story. And I hope the stories continue.

Title: For All the Tea in China

Comments:

When you have your "cuppa," you may not even think about how that tea got to your cup. But Sarah Rose did her investigating and brings us this tale of espionage, botanical exploration, and international relations.

The East India Company had sent Robert Fortune to explore interior China to bring plants back to England. Later, after the Opium War with China, the British were concerned about their continued source of tea, so they sent Fortune back to China to "steal" tea plants and learn about processing tea so the British could begin their own plantations in India.

This was an exciting adventure, the travel alone was full of magnificent mountains, vistas, and different peoples living off of their lands.

And then the science - is green and black tea from the same plant? How to smuggle/transport plants and delicate seeds from China to India?

The politics even include a new gun, the Enfield, and religious resistance to using them.

All for the tea - unusual and interesting facts bring this story right to your table!

Title: And I Shall Have Some Peace There

Comments:

Hello Margaret, it's me, Linda!

Boy, I can identify with many of your garden/nature experiences (I'm even "one with the (snow) shovel, as you and Herb do the dance). It's been a wonderful year's journey with you through garden experiences and life. Your writings have expressed insight and hope...

Well, it was a big change from your Martha Stewart job in NYC to move to Cupcake (oops - Copake) Falls, NY, to your little weekend house (now become your "residence"). These personal transitions can be challenging (but I'm glad you are sharing ups and downs - snails, have no fear of Margaret!).

You refer to Martha's phrase, "Learn something new every day," (ain't that the truth!). And yes, sometimes we think too much and don't let the magic happen (signs are all around and we will be guided even with your Buddha's closed eyes; my Dido has his open).

We should learn to look more - out our windows (I have a favorite, like you), at our plants (they, too, have their cycles), at our gardens (changing through the seasons) and our lives. The lightning will still come but we'll keep our bowl of acorns!

Keep watching for the heron, Margaret, as I watch for my dragonflies (you know, they are a good sign too!)

Thank you for sharing your year Margaret. It's been a wonderful reflection of life and gardens (and frogs, bugs, foxes).

Bye for now and meow to Jack. I too will continue the hunt for wisdom and healing in nature (as I do) and notice the randomness and magic!

Title: Red Herring

Comments:

Whether it's dangling from somewhere or gathering forensic evidence, or following his "gut feeling," Joe Gunther is a hero!

All these stories happen in Vermont. Archer Mayor (maybe he's a hero?) from Newfane, VT, takes you from Brattleboro to Burlington. VBI (the Vermont Bureau of Investigation), lead by Joa and his team of "personalities" (who you will appreciate), are thorough, analytical, moody AND quick thinking, get their man.

Mayor is graphic in his descriptions of the towns (you don't have to go there) and the issues are the same everywhere: arson, drugs, ski areas, internet, gangs, etc.

The investigations begin, the geography is explained, various departments are consulted, and the bureaucracy is the same everywhere.

The pace is fast, the thought process is thorough and the characters will become your teammates as become a follower of the investigations.

You can start with earlier books, but the characters are the same. You'd be introduced to each one, in each story. Try Archer Mayor!

Title: Clara & Mr. Tiffany

Comments:

Turn of the centruy NYC life - of workers and those important movers in art and architecture. Mr. Tiffany, known for his famous stained glass work, had a separate female staff to work on the intricate details of windows and, later, lamps and more affordable items for the home.

Clara Driscoll managed the women - encouraging design and creativity. She worked closely with Mr. Tiffany and understood his thoughts about nature - stylize it but don't copy it.

There is a great feeling of being in NYC at the turn of the century - gas lights to electric, bicycles, museums, life of the famous and life and struggles of the working class - especially women.

Well researched, with notes on the real Clara and her personal life, Vreeland blends the NYC scene into an engaging story filled with art, politics, romance, and history!

Comments:

Food. You can taste it. You can see it. You can smell it. You can even feel it.

Rowen Jacobsen brings you to the lands, the terroir, where foods grow so you can experience these senses; Jacobsen gives you the sense of foods being.

We eat and enjoy but how often have we thought about our foods? With today's concern for the environment, global warming, local eats, and local farmers, I suggest (highly) that you "taste" these pages. Savor the words and swallow the thoughts - and then, maybe you'd say, "I think I understand."

"Thou, Nature, art my Goddess."
- William Shakespeare

"Nature" is flexible, changing, and dynamic. We are part of nature. Can we change, adapt to the growing environmental and economic crises that are enveloping the world??

Prince Charles, who has been active internationally with educating and inspiring others to view the world as an entire life system (us included), has brought his experience and thoughts together in Harmony.

Global warming, pollution, agriculture, social & economic issues, as well as ancient history and architecture are blended to give a truly international look at these issues.

Nature cannot be treated as a machine for our monetary benefits! Nature is our business.

This is a very thoughtful and engaging book with documentation and illustrations to try to bring facts and possibilities to change all of us.

Title: The Killer of Little Shepherds

Comments:

The best introduction to this book is in the title and subtitle, but the exciting details of the emerging science of forensics with beginnings in the 1840s to 1900s.

From doctors to lawyers, the policemen, and the scientists working independently finally merge their talents and findings for a complete picture of crime scenes, fingerprinting (and footpinting!), anthropomorphic study of criminals' physical dimensions and mental proportions (after death), plus the added "drama" of the press and telegraph communication.

It may not be today's CSI, but the work began long ago and continues to evolve. Starr carries the investigations and research through many years and various countries - particularly France and Italy - to the pivotal court case.

History and drama all the way through!

Title: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Comments:

Writing with compassion and a thorough sense of the scientific implications, Ms. Skloot unravels the mystery behind the "HeLa" cells. In Virginia, in the 1950's, if you were black the only medical facility that would treat you was Johns Hopkins. But that was a last resort - folks felt that they may never be able to leave or that they would be experimented on.

Henrietta had to make that journey with her diagnosis of cervical cancer; and here begins the story of the "cells."

Henrietta's cancerous cells were removed (for research purposes) without her or her family's knowledge. These cells, nicknamed HeLa, have been reproducing and aiding research around the world for over 50 years. They have been involved in Polio, HIV, and cancer research - to name a few - all of tremendous importance.

But what about the family? To Henrietta's family, with their limited knowledge of the science, this became another exploitation of Black folks.

Through ten years of learning about HeLa and winning the confidence of the Lacks family, Ms. Skloot has brought justice to this issue. The profound emotions of Deborah, Henrietta's daughter, have brought Henrietta the person - mother, friend amd sister - to a new understanding of what it is to give of oneself... A truly remarkable read!

Title: Poisoner's Handbook

Comments:

Today's EPA and FDA would shudder at the contents of some early twentieth-century medicines, cosmetics, and bootleg booze.

Blum combines the science of cyanide, carbon monoxide (and other "things") with the social and political times of the 1920's-1930's AND the real people who experienced poisoning - directly or indirectly!

It was the time of prohibition and the beginnings of forensic medicine at the Bellevue Hospital. there were doctors and scientists who were dedicated to making forensics an exacting science even if it meant spending their own money or speaking out - politically incorrect - to all of New York City and the world!

A great historical read blended well with narrative and scientific research.

It'll make you read the ingredients more carefully and wonder if the EPA and FDA are as thorough as they can be!!

Title: Twilight at the World of Tomorrow

Comments:

Rainy days can ruin any fair, especially a World's Fair. But rain was not the only problem at the 1939 World's Fair in NYC.

Mauro has vividly brought together all the dynamics of organizing this event; the Everyman's Fair. The dream was to show progress in science and modern living plus how the world could move towards peace and cooperation.

Unfortunately, in 1939, Hitler was beginning his movement, Einstein was alerting FDR about uses for uranium, weather was horrid, attendance was slack, and bomb threats were constant.

An intense read yet very personal for those involved: Robt, Moses, Einstein, Whalen, La Guardia, and the masses of immigrants who gathered in the last days of the fair in 1940 - praying for their homeland...

This was upsetting because we have not made much progress internationally. It was to be shown - the stupidity of war - changed to goodwill...

Great historical read!

Title: My river Chronicles

Comments:

She didn't start out on a boat (although she loved the hands-on projects with her family). And then she became the engineer of a fireboat and her little 'tuglette'.

Jessica is a wonderful writer who blends in the "today" with the "yesterday" of ships and the Hudson River.

The working tradition of the Hudson, changes along the waterfront, the lost art of navigation, and the craftsmanship and diversity of old technology are smoothly integrated into this lovely memoir.

There are also the personalities involved in the boat-to-person relationships and Jessica's own trial by fire, so to speak, with the fireboat she learns to engineer; the 9/11 experience and the tug boat the preservationists purchase.

Preservation of the old things - boats, buildings, tools - are all partof this story.

Learning the old methods, keeping a physical record of the past and all the challenges it presented will help us learn to deal with new and future challenges. History gives place and soul.

The Hudson was, and still is, so much.

Title: Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

Comments:

This book is a special treat, especially for those that enjoy British comedy as seen on PBS.

you can picture the scenes and the antics of all the characters as they go about their 'doings' in the village. The characters are delightful. There is intrigue! A touch of romance and much laughter round out this uplifting story.

With a 'spot of tea,' served with a real mug of course, you'll be brought to terms with family, sons, religion and race. But remember to enjoy the tour of the village via the people!

Some of the Major's words of wisdom:
-"He is medically allergic to children."
-"kids eat the icing off cupcakes and put them back on the platter naked and disolving with spit!"
-"People spend so much time and energy on the adverse judgment of others."

Title: A Fierce Radiance

Comments:

Medical Mystery? Romance? WWII? Family Issues? Spies? Big Business? Scientific Research? I hope I have all the subjects covered!

Fast paced with WWII history in NYC and the ruch for penicillin "for the war effort." Belfer blends all the subjects together in a moving and emotional book which brings you into this historical drama.

It makes you wonder how the medical "industry" manages the research and funding, plus the difficult decicion with treatments.

Historical references are present throughout and the NYC connected with the Rockefeller Institute brings it all close to home.

Title: Checklist Manifesto

Comments:

His examples are detailed and sometimes graphic; but he makes us imminently aware of what wonders human can achieve.

I could make a list of a few key words/guides for making lists: knowledge, necessary steps, team work & communication, accomplishing specific tasks but also able to adapt to complex situations - like Wal-Mart's role in the Hurricane Katrina disaster (Good Job, Wal-Mart!).

Why the list? Get things done quickly, efficiently and safely. But it also leaves room to act and adapt to unexpected or unpredictable situations.

Of course, Gawande brings this method to medical practice, especially with the ER and surgery. These are life-or-death situations that can become extremely complicated. With a basic list of procedures, even the W.H.O. international health organization can help doctors and their patients to survive.

Gawande is a remarkable writer - and I suspect an incredible doctor!

Title: Rewilding the World

Comments:

Do not be afraid! Large predators evolved with humans and they learned that humans are nasty predators themselves...

Rewilding is not a new concept. Aldo Leopold talked about it in 1949, and it has recently resurfaced. Basically, vast corridors of land are set aside to help species survive. but how do you get poorer countries to set aside land when they need it for food?

This becomes a scientific and a social issue. Ms. Fraser takes you around the world to meet unique animals and people, and their situations where inspired leaders, creative financing and grassroots efforts can make a difference.

This is just to slow extinction rates; man needs to re-engineer our own habits and consumption because all species are intertwined. Many interesting concepts are explained and animals' lives explored within.

Title: Remarkable Creatures

Comments:

Remarkable - a 12 year-old girl in the early 1800s can find, clean and understand fossils! Not only that, but survived being hit by lightning!

The shores of Lyme Regis were being eroded and washed away, uncovering bits and pieces of the prehistoric past. Mary knew where to look and helped her family through hard times by selling specimens to tourists. One such woman became Mary's close friend and they were catapulted into the scientific spotlight with one of Mary's finds.

It's a story about discovery, friendship, family and a highly knowledgeable woman who became a a part of the patriarchal scientific community. A fight to be sure...

1830-1850s were interesting times; science and religion, geological discovery; fossil hunters and collectors - the world was changing.

This is based on a real person, Mary Anning, who became so knowledgeable and skilled a paleontologist that she made great and lasting contributions to science.

What was the crime of the century? Harry Thaw murdering Stanford White? Mrs. Nesbitt manipulating her daughter - for money? Stanny using Evelyn? Harry Thaw using Evelyn??

A complicated personal and historical tale which may bring your emotions to boil!

But, such was NYC in the new 1900's - working girls, rich men, freedom but sufferings...

Evelyn's story was made famous in the movie "Girl on a Red Velvet Swing" and more recently in "Ragtime."

Stanford White, the great architect, and Harry Thaw, rich playboy looking for revenge, were both tied into Eveyln's life. She was the face for many products - Fairy Soap, Coca Cola, etc. And she became the one to suffer humiliation and betrayal.

A great for history folks - and for the Berkshires - as Stanley White's works are still here.

Comments:

Have you thought of those sweetly singing songbirds of spring as bioindicators for the whole Earth? Perhaps not, we just enjoy their melodies. But, where have they travelled? What about their life stories, and what international issues have been in their paths?

Since Rachel Carson exposed pesticides as a bird threat, the public was/is/should be aware of chemicals. These "canaries" are still threatened (remember their great migrations) by more chemicals, deforestation, bright lights and tall buildings, habitat destruction and even your kitty cat!

Stutchburg explains it all and makes suggestions on how we can make a difference. After all, we too are like "canaries" on this caged Earth!

It is an autobiography that is told with emotion and hope.

But as "Fish" has said - the power comes from within you; it's up to yourself to succeed. The movie is good, but the book is so much more revealing of "Fish."

Comments:

Absolutely absorbing historical tale of humanity where you'll meet "Uncle Wiggly Whigs"!

After WWII, Berlin was divided between the 4 Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, U.S., & Soviet Union) to rebuild the city.

But the Soviets mere "moving" in Europe & wanted Berlin too. Politics not fighting was this next conflict as the Soviets put pressure on the 2,000,000 Berliners, survivng the devastated city, with the Blockade. No supplies were to get through; Berliners barely survived, *Berliners mere determined to resist the Soviets because they wanted freedom & democracy at any cost.

U.S. military had mixed feelings (hard feelings after WWII but quite a change afterward) of how much effort they should expend- lose Berlin, may lose all of Europe.

So an Airlift was started and under new leadership by Tonner, it became like clockwork like the planes dancing.

The remarkable Candy Bomber who defied regulations, dropped the parachute candy packages to children, became the miracle worker who brought all the chaos into international eyes.

At this time, 1948-49, Truman was running for election, politics was hot & the stubborn Soviets were unrelenting. The basic moral issue- let the Berliners down OR continue Airlift, America made a choice & in her glory, came through.

Month by month action with issues, tensions & people (including Bob Hope) make this an emotional read.

AND this was the start of the Cold War-----

Title: An Irish Country Village

Patrick Taylor first charmed readers with "An Irish Country Doctor," a warm and enchanting novel in the tradition of James Herriot and Jan Karon. Now Taylor returns to the colorful Northern Ireland community of Ballybucklebo, where there's always something brewing beneath the village's deceptively sleepy surface. Young Doctor Barry Laverty has only just begun his assistantship under his eccentric mentor, Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly, but he already feels right at home in Ballybucklebo. When the sudden death of a patient casts a cloud over Barry's reputation, his chances of establishing himself in the village are endangered, especially since the grieving widow is threatening a lawsuit.

While he anxiously waits for the postmortem results that he prays will exonerate him, Barry must regain the trust of the gossipy Ulster village, one patient at a time. From a put-upon shop girl with a mysterious rash to the troubled pregnancy of a winsome young lass who's not quite married yet, Ballybucklebo provides plenty of cases to keep the two country G.P.s busy. Not all their challenges are medical in nature. When a greedy developer sets his sights on the very heart of the community, the village pub, it's up to the doctors to save the Black Swan (affectionately known to the locals as the "Mucky Duck") from being turned into an overpriced tourist trap. After all, the good citizens of Ballybucklebo need some place to drink to each other's health...

Whether you've visited in the past, or are discovering Ballybucklebo for the first time, "An Irish Country Village" is an ideal location for anyone looking for wit, warmth, and just a touch of blarney.

Become one with the osprey - live on their time, that's the technique Gessner learned to use to observe the returning osprey.
The book is a combination memoir, naturalist study and historical view
Some may recall DDT, Rachel Carson and the start of the environmental movement. The osprey has made a comeback to the Cape - and maybe, a positive reinforcement for us - that we can make a difference.
Gessner learned to slow down, to look, to listen and to hope.
Enjoy this book for it's prose, science and wonder. And if it moves you, start opening your eyes to your own backyard to see.

Cokinos writes with such emotion about disturbing issues - bird extinctions. It's a readable historical review full of drama, intrigue, passion, commitment and "new science." Stories are a mix of emotions - with fatal endings, but Cokinos eases you thru with a spark of hope. The pattern is the same: extinctions are part of life, but humans have accelerated that rate thru habitat destruction. Cokinos reminds us: ALL species are part of the whole. Let's listen to his stories.

I did see the Stockholm up close in 1956, but was too young to understand. Now, Goldstein has put the "news" on the fron tpage.

It reads as a minute-by-minute live story. The collision (Stockholm & Andrea Doria), reactions of captains & crews, actions of rescuers responding to distress calls and voyagers, keep this fast-paced.

Many questions mere raised- media coverage, legal claims, procedures - all following a tragedy, are still with us today.

Luckily, this was not a Titanic story. You'll get accounts of how it felt to travel first class, history after WWII, rescur actions and people...

This "epic tragedy" as it is called, certainly gives a graphic view not only of the - before, during & after - the sinking of the Lusitania, but of the time - 1915.

As historical page turner and thought-provoking story, this new age of warfare, WWI, was emerging - chemicals & subs & tensions running high on both sides of the Atlantic.

Diana Preston does an extraordinary job taking you on that final voyage. With the personalities, technologies, and international intrigue, you'll learn this was no simple sinking.

It's called a "novel of old New York." It could be a novel of today's New York or any other city! The author draws on real personalities & real incidents to blend an exciting tale.

The public epidemic of Yellow Fever needs to be addressed! Close the parks? Isolation? BUT-what about business and trade; poor immigrants working or not? How does the media play into this drama? Real life, old New York early & mid 1800's is described, but the problems & questions of city life-are still the same-Public vs. Private!

Totally unlike her previous books-Patricia is unusual but not cruel. Mystery, but mostly humor! The characters (even their names made me laugh), the incidents and still the Cornwell mystery make this a great read. You'll find yourself laughing out loud-many times. But the mystery is there. Have fun following the twists and turns.
