Julia's Past Picks 2

Don't judge a reader by their staff picks. Yes, my list may seem heavily female and fantasy oriented. There is so much more to my library! I also happen to enjoy mysteries, non-fiction, memoirs (about walking places), legend/folklore/mythology, and science fiction as well (admittedly Star Wars!).

Comments:
This was an incredible book to read. Roxane Gay has written a memoir that is as direct as it gets. Straight up. It reaches out and grabs at you in so many ways. Roxane's honesty is sad, a little disturbing, & beautiful. Though not my story I felt it in my bones. We don't get excuses, or justification, or an apology for the condition of her body- we are given a reason. A horrible event that had a tremendous effect on a young woman.I admire Roxane for writing this memoir, her lack of apologyis admirable. It is bold.  Roxane Gay is my hero.

Published: Grove Press - January 3rd, 2017

Comments:
Difficult Women is a collection of beautifully written stories about the pain and anger hidden deep down inside screaming for release. Some of them are shocking, maybe even ugly. But they are very real. Completely & brutally honest. They are stripped bare & they are brave.
"a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection."
Roxane Gay's writing is phenomenal. The diverse cast of women in these stories come from places of privilege, poverty, and everything in between. They cover topics of violence, love, hate, sex, guilt, trauma, loss, motherhood, race, relationships, and abuse. Each story/woman is distinctly her own person and at the same time universally all of us.
As dark as this collection is, it is also full of strength, endurance, love, and even hope.

Comments:
"This book is so authentically written, so beautifully crafted that reading it made me feel at home at once."
I cannot say enough how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Bear and the Nightingale; I haven't loved a book this much in a while.
Recommended for fans of: Uprooted by Naomi Novik, Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and Neil Gaiman.
This is a breathtaking story set in medieval Russia, somewhere in between the northern wilds and the kingdom's capital in a small village caught between the old and new religions. It charts the life of Vasya from birth, who was born with a wildness about her, as she navigates the shifting dynamics in her village.
This tale will envelope you in its history and magic. This debut novel wonderfully blends fairytale and historical Russia.

Comments:
I enjoyed this book for all the same reasons I enjoyed "Wake of Vulture"; primarily because Nettie/Rhett is a great character.
This book is full of people that are complex. And when you jumble them up with vampire, shape-shifters and other mythological creatures, throw them in a post-war "wild west", you get a hearty story. Another fabulous read.

Comments:

You may not be aware of the literary puns played with here, or the mirroring of the life of the actual Virginia Woolf. You don't have to be in order to appreciate this story about moody day and supportive sisters.

This beautifully illustrated tale reminds us of the hard days when nothing can cheer us; and of the love & support that a sibling (or parent or friend) can give. And hopefully the doldrums pass by.

Title: The Golden Yarn

Comments:
Cornelia Funke has done it again!  Mirror World is how fairy tales should be told; with the perfect amount of enchantment and fear. With the third installment the tale becomes more entangled with curses, first born debts and magical beings.
Funke's descriptions of the mirror people, despair, magical items, and a Baba Yaga's house are vivid.
Fairy tales were originally told to entertain, to scare and to teach; there are as many things to fear in Mirror World as there are to love. And many lessons to be learned.

Comments:

Wow, I love this book. I think many children go through "I hate my name" phases or at least I did. That's probably why it speaks to me.
Oh, and the illustrations work so well with the story. On each page the Little Thunder's story is fully expressed. It is colorful, active, and fun! The illustrations are so much fun.
Many of us as children had a reason to feel different. Maybe because your name is very unique, or your parents.
Or maybe you just wanted to be your own person, but people constantly said: "just like your mom", or "your uncle was the same way", etc.
Well in any case this is that kind of story, and I love it!

Title: Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4)

Comments:

5 reasons to read this book:
1. Aelin Galathynis, Queen of Tarrasen (aka Celaena Sardothian) is awesome! Even if she is scared and angry and well sometimes scary.
2. Aelin will fight. She will fight for her cousin, she will fight for her friend, and she will fight for her people.
3. Fortunately Aelin has a band of fighters at her side, that will fight just as hard for her, as she will them.
4. Sometimes foes can be friends? and friends can be foes?
5. Queen of Shadows builds to a "passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter [Aelin's] world"
Also, Sarah J. Maas is awesome!

Comments:
With every one of these books I have been surprised. I have been tangled up in the web that Maggie Stiefvater has woven. This series is enchanting.
Once again, we have been given a great story, now at it's end, but still filled with possibility.
I don't think it could have been wrapped up more satisfactory. I was so worried about the inevitability of Gansey's death, that I was afraid of an ultimate let down. But even with destiny lingering over them, Blue and her Raven Boys still continue forth. They tangle and untangle, they strive and they are there for each other, unbreakable.

Isabelle Arsenault's illustrations make my heart quicken. This is the fifth book illustrated by her that I have fallen in love with. The lines she draws sing to me. They harmonize along with the story told by Amy Novensky about Louise Bourgeois.
I am pulled into the artists journey through her childhood to adulthood and eventually the sculptures that she would create.
This book evokes her in full spirit. The combination of story & quotes; the colors & lines that mimic Louise's own work. I am inspired.

Title: All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independant Nation

Comments:

"Quite suddenly, people are freer to take off in a number of directions, and they are taking advantage of that freedom.
That diversity of behavior is startling. It's different, uncharted, and admittedly a little scary."

From the start I have been cooing over this book. I am excited about the information flowing through these pages. I did not read it because I was looking for validation of my single status. I read it because the title is as catchy as the song it is named after.
First and foremost All The Single Ladies is about trends in marriage and the need for equal rights for woman who are choosing another route. It is about the stigma surrounding those women choosing to not marry or cohabitate, even though more and more women choose to remain single and do so happily.
I want everyone I know to read this book: The women, the men, the single, and the married. I could list all the passages I marked and dog eared along the way, but I will let you find them on your own (although many are posted to my social media).

"It's time to rebuild the world for the diverse women who live in it now, more freely, than ever before."

Comments:

e.e.cummings is the only poet I remember from my college lit class. We studied him and I found him so interesting I read his novel.
What better way to talk about his poetry and life than by applying his style and playfulness to the illustrations and biography!
The use of layers, words, and pictures is great. I enjoy looking at this biography as mush as I enjoy reading it!

Title: The Sleeper and the Spindle

Comments:

Cursed thorns are spreading outward and the surrounding kingdoms are now plagued with sleep. Three dwarves investigate these rumors and bring it to their queen. She decides to find out what's going on and discovers things are not what they seem.
This retelling is dark and twisty-- we don't get what we expect. The sleeper, the hero, and the adventure is all familiar and NEW at the same time.
I first read this story in Rags & Bones: New Twists On Old Tales, a compilation of retellings. I really had liked Neil Gaiman's take on Sleeping Beauty and his inclusion of Snow White. Then it was published solo in this great graphic edition!
This book is gorgeous, the illustrations are as enchanting, as tangled, as thorny, as haunting, and as eerie as the writing.
I listened to the audio of this stunning book and was impressed again. This isn't a bedtime picture book-- this creepy creation is for older readers and the very brave!

Title: Winter (Lunar Chronicles #4)

Comments:

Marissa Meyer has brought this series to a great conclusion!
They all live happily ever after!
Well, it doesn't seem that way as you read.
How many times is Levana going to beat Cinder? She is so good at being a psychotic bad guy. She will stop at nothing.
Cinder has her team of rebels fully formed- Scarlet & her big bad Wolf, Cress & her charming criminal Thorne, and finally Princess Winter & her delusions (also her not so charming guard Jacin). Princess Winter is the best Snow White I have ever read. I love her and her crazy, the reason she is crazy, the fact that beneath it she hides a bit of cunning and the fact that she truly cares for her people. Plus she is the fairest in the land.
Although this rag tag team seems to be very unlucky, they fight, they strive, and they will not stop until Levana is dethroned or they themselves die in the process.
This is a great conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles.

Comments:

Revolution, Love, Religion, Hackers, & Jinn. All the right ingrediants for a contemporary look at life in an unnamed middle eastern city.
This novel is fantastically written and accessible for all readers, not just those well informed in current events.
G. Willow Wilson takes you on a whirlwind adventure of a young hacker embroiled in more than just his secluded computer life.
Alif's world is wonderfully described, from the dictatorial society to the invisible city of the Jinn. We see the beauty and also "the desperate, fearful, and claustrophobic conditions in which the citizens of the city live." -RR
There are just so many reasons this book is good.
The first time I read it I was taken in by the thrill of the chase, the second time I was able to appreciate the details more. Read Alif the Unseen and then read it again!

I think this is a book that will bring endless enjoyment to its reader (owner)!

Title: Wake of Vultures

Comments:

This is a great book.
The writing has a nice flow that carries you along.  The combination of fantasy, the occult and Native American myth is well blended.
The main character, Nettie, is complex, or maybe very simple. She is hungry and ragged; ignorant and unaware of the world outside the shabby ranch and town she has grown up in.
Overnight Nettie's world changes and starts her on a journey that will teach her much more than she ever imagined. This book stands out from the usual fantasy crowd:  Native American and Western myths, plus Nettie's multicultural heritage and a wide range of characters.  Wake of Vultures is a fabulous read.
P.S. Contains skin-walkers, harpies, chupacabra, vampires, fanged rabbits, shadows and more.

Title: Spinster

Comments:

I have to say, it is a relief to read about a woman who is struggling with her desire to be single as opposed to the struggle of finding and keeping a partner. This isn't about how the writer can't find a husband or about how desirable she is or isn't. It's about her identifying and introducing us to the "Spinster"- a single unmarried woman past a certain age (my definition). Along the way Kate Bolick introduces us to other single writers she finds along her journey. Without her mother to share her struggle with, she finds a conversation with these writers/women. Some I was introduced to for the first time.

I really enjoyed this book. It's great if you are not already knowledgeable of the many great female writers out there. A good stepping stone to new voices! I also appreciated Kate's journe, because I myself am currently in the category of "Spinster", or, preferably, a term I loved that Kate uses: "ambiguous woman" (the scholar Carolyn Heilbrun's wonderful term for those who choose not to center their lives around a man).

Surrounded by swarms of Nos, Yes, a great orange thing, leaves his safe nest to go out and explore. But the flimsy Nos try to impede his every step.
This is a charming story about overcoming obstacles full of encouragement with wonderfully colorful illustrations.

Title: It's What I Do

Comments:
This is a captivating portrayal of photojournalist Lynsey Addario's involvement covering the Middle East.
Addario shares with us her experiences, which extend from a near death car accident to kidnapping, being robbed, and both sexual and physical assault. She shares her passion, her need to photograph while being shot at- to risk her life on a daily basis in order to give the world images that could change public opinion and policy. "...[Addario]brings an incredible sense of humanity to all the battlefields of her life." She addresses the difficulties of being a woman in an overwhelmingly male profession.
This memoir is a brilliant portrayal of the personal, professional and logistical aspects of photojournalism. It is full of compassion, courage and "unflinching candor".
I could not get enough of her story; I read this literally sitting on the edge of my chair, finally forcing myself to put the book down and go to bed.
