Julia's Past Picks 1

Don't judge a reader by their staff picks. Yes, my list may seem heavily female and fantasy oriented. There is so much more to my library! I also happen to enjoy mysteries, non-fiction, memoirs (about walking places), legend/folklore/mythology, and science fiction as well (admittedly Star Wars!).

The Porcelain Thief: Searching the Middle Kingdom for Buried China Cover Image

ISBN: 9780307986306

Published: Crown Publishing Group (NY) - March 24th, 2015

Huan Hsu chronicles his journey to unearth his family's porcelain, said to have been buried during WW2. The treasure was then lost during China's Cultural Revolution. Although the surviving family members can't agree to what was owned and what became of the porcelain, Huan Hsu'S journey to for the truth has given him some great stories.
He learns his family's history and discovers a China he was completely unprepared for.
I decided to read this book because I enjoyed "The Hare with the Amber Eyes", however his time in the urban and rural areas reminded me of the dystopian and sci-fi novels I enjoy. And if you don't appreciate reading dystopian or sci-fi, you will like this for the writer's story telling, the cultural insight and the history.

Comments:

At first I admired this book for its lovely watercolors. then as I read, I found it was funny. Humor is great way to approach fear. I mean the dark, girls, wasps, haircuts and plaid all can be scary!
This is a sweet book about  giving yourself a chance to face your fears and have a positive experience.
Grab this book, enjoy the illustrations and discover a few ways to overcome a fear of the dark.

Title: Shadow Scale (Seraphina #2)

Comments:

Rachel Hartman has once again written a fantastic book.In Shadow Scale Seraphina continues to search out the half-dragons from her garden. As she does she is pursued by humans who want to stop her and another half-dragon named Jannoula with frightening powers. She and her task are under a great threat. As she meets and gathers these other half-dragons we fall in love with each one. They are all such great characters- with maybe with one exception. Although Seraphina is threatened by Jannoula and her human pursuers we are unclear as to who her enemies are. Can she successfully gather her new friends and save her kingdom from imminent threat by the dragons and/or the anti-dragon neighbors?
This is an incredible story with wonderfully written personalities and relationships, great world-building and plot. All of which go beyond the "diversity of race, sex and gender". Shadow Scale is as beautifully written as Seraphina with an "impeccable ending to the unexpected duet"- worth the wait!

Ileni's action-packed adventure among assassins and sorcerers continues in this exciting sequel.
Ileni constantly struggles with the direction she wants to choose. Yet she has grown since she first entered the caves and now that she has headed into the Empire to see their "truth", it's no wonder she is indecisive.
You'll be on the edge of your seat as you follow the masterfully crafted plot twists that Ileni must navigate to make her ultimate earth-shattering decision- but first she (and you!) must figure out whose side to take... if any! Is there really a clear distinction between good and evil? Ileni, a badass yet still thoughtful and principled heroine, will take you on an adventure you don't want to miss!

Title: Lily Blue, Blue Lily

Comments:

As we enter into the third book of The Raven Cycle, our troop's journey does not get any easier. "Friends can betray, mothers can disappear, visions can mislead, certainties can unravel." This series and its characters are complex, at time I'm not sure I can follow along. Did I miss something or was it right there as I read it? Maggie Stievfvater weaves a tale of impossible friendship. We see each one through the others' eyes, faults and their individual beauty, it's the most revealing way to see them. They are an untouchable force of friends. The Raven Cycle is mesmorizing. Once I read it I go back and listen to it, just to get a little more. It's poetic, and perfectly paced with cliffhangers and tension. Maggie is a great story teller. She weaves magic into every part, the kind of magic we can believe in. Yes, mythical kings, ley lines and dream forests; but also "The magic of true friendship, of love, of unshakeable loyalty."

It's interesting to read a dystopian book that doesn't include bows and arrows, science experiments, love triangles, and drug abuse. Memory of Water is beautifully written and thought provoking. It has a strong female lead and a strong message...

Sometimes strength is quiet.

Title: Wonderland

Comments:
I found this book interesting, poetic, quiet and pleasant all while the protagonist is in the midst of a tour of Europe, a midlife dilemma, a struggle for identity without art, and a rock-n-roll scene.

D'Erasmo has written a book that hits on how art (music, visual, and written) is ambiguous and "awash in insecurity and instability". She gives us a montage of flashbacks: a childhood of traveling the world with her artist parents, past album tours, drug-induced creative processes, loss, letters to her sister, past relationships, fears, daydreams, and possibilities. I finished the last page and the first thing that came to mind was- Satisfied.

Comments:
Killing is bad, and although Ileni has accepted that she is destined to die in the caves she is heading to too, she still struggles with the fact that the caves are filled with assassins. Who kill without remorse. As Ileni searches for the killer of her two predecessors, she struggles with her beliefs. With what she has always trusted as the truth, as Right. Can she hold onto her beliefs or as she comes to know these assassins, will her views change? Will she embrace the power offered to her in these caves or will she find a different path?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Ileni takes us on an adventure of mystery, love, and self-awareness. With an ending leaving you wanting to find out... what next!

Comments:
Violet is not a "Real" princess like the ones she hears about in stories. She has curly frizzy hair; her eyes are 2 different colors; she runs, jumps, climbs, & explores. Her best friend is a stable boy named Demetrius and they both love to explore and listen to stories.

One day they find a book in a hidden passage of the castle. Violet keeps it and soon finds out it has magic in it. A chain of events start to release this magical presence from its prison. It might just be evil. Violet must stop doubting herself and save her kingdom. she is a "real" princess. She and Demetrius must work together to stop this evil.

This is a great story of self discovery and bravery that all can enjoy.

But if you are looking for a tale you can walk away from feeling refreshed and satisfied, yes! Lady Isabella Trent is a great heoine and her story is wonderful. Natural History, politics, dragons, and maybe even love? What an interesting combination. The author wraps this all up in a well written package.

I say pick up this series, give it a try, and enjoy it as much as myself.

Title: the Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly

Comments:
To become a mother, the self-named hen, Sprout, has to sacrifice the acceptance of others and has to face life as an outcast with an adopted child who is different from herself. She courageously fights every day to keep her little duckling safe, until he flies away and leaves her alone to face her own mortality. The same end that her duckling's parents have already met while keeping him safe. This is a simple yet wonderful tale of love and friendship. Subtly raising issues of the "unconventional family" prejudice, motherhood, freedom, sacrifice and mortality. Solidly told and well translated, a story for all ages. Compared to classics like Charlotte's Web and Seagull. Also compared to Animal Farm, but I would say it is an opposite view of humanity.

Comments:
Princess Behaving Badly is a fun and fast read full of historical tidbits. These mini biographies hold the right amount of "quirk" and information to keep the "non-historian" like me interested. Title: A Dance of Cloaks

Comments:
A Dance of Cloaks is a dark and twisting tale of a city at war. It is full of assasinations and sword play. Each character grabs hold of your attention and keeps it through a fast paced, unpredictable and fascinating story.

The point of view is constantly shifting between main and supporting characters, leaving you with much to think about and wondering at the outcome. In a book full of "relentless brutal action" is there a chance for good to overcome and win? OR is good vs. evil more of a gray area? Who will come out on top? Will the war ever end?

Recommended for fans of George R. R. Martin, Brent Weeks, Peter V. Brett, and Joe Abercrombie.

Title: Raven Cycle (#1 The Raven Boys, #2 The Dream Thieves)

Comments:
I will admit that book 1 (The Raven Boys) of the Raven Cycle has its hiccups. The pacing is a little off and the ending left me confused. (I did enjoy it anyway.)

Then I read The Dream Thieves (Book 2) and everything just snapped into place. I really enjoy Maggie Stiefvater's writing. Her characters are usually smart, sometimes sensible and diverse. She writes fantasy but is not heavy handed with it. I have yet to be disappointed with her storytelling. Her creations are magical. The plot for the Raven Cycle is layered and leaves you knowing what will happen, but wondering how???!

Susan Cooper is a great story teller. I have read The Dark is Rising sequence- the title book when I was 12 and the rest when I was 25 and it stands the tst of time. Ghost Hawk is just as memorable.

For me her subject is one I wasn't sure I wanted to read about but Cooper did a great job. I loved the story, it's full of history, friendship, truth, and magic. She has "a historian's attention to detail" and has created two wonderful main characters. Pick up this book, give it a try, and if you are not already, fall in love with Cooper's story-telling!

Title: Jane, the Fox, and Me

Comments:
It is something many kids go through: invisibility, cruelty, alienation. Helene, our young narrator is having this experience, but she escapes her social banishment into "Jane Eyre". She draws witty, sarcastic, and a bit self-deprecating comparisons between herself and Jane (and a sausage).

This is a story many of us can recognize- there is most likely someone in your class, on your bus, or in your family who has gone through this experience.

The illustration is lovely and enhances the solitude of Helene. It has touched my heart and also made me laugh.

"There isn't anything revolutionary about this quiet book... But there doesn't really need to be." -Brodesser Akner

Comments:
This book does not have a dystopian or a dysfunctional government (a miracle) and it's not the future in which we have destroyed ourselves or the earth (what a relief). It is the U.S. as it would be if the Vikings and their Norse pantheon were its founding fathers. The gods are real and even participate in holidays and such.

One of the things I liked about this book is that it isn't just about Thor or Loki, but rather the lesser-known god Baldur. Baldur disappears and Odin offers a boon to whoever can find him. Of course there are a couple of teenagers who happen to be destined to be our unlikely heroes. They set out to recover the beloved Baldur the Beautiful and to claim their prize.

Title: A Natural History of Dragons

Comments:
This is not your conventional fantasy novel with high-flying adventure, magic, and epic battles. Marie Brennan has done a wonderful job writing a fictionalized memoir st in a Victorian-like period, by a young woman who has a love for dragons (which are real), and goes against convention to study them. The narrator is an old woman recalling her earlier adventures that led up to her as a respected natural historian. I found the novel refreshing. Brennan is not trying to make a completely likable heroine. The writing is convincing, sharp, whimsical, and beautiful. I would recommend this book for fantasy lovers, admirers of the Regency/Victorian era, or anyone who loves dragons, wants to believe they are real, or are interested in their study!

Comments:
If you are a fan of Jane Austen or Charles Dickens, this book is a good choice. You get the pride and manners of Austen mixed with a little of the dust, grit, and loss of Dickens. The result is another great novel from the 19th century!

Title: Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles Book 2)

Comments:
So we continue with Cinder as a fugitive. Her stepmom is still mean, but she is Harmless when compared to the Lunar Queen (and her science experiments!). The prince seems a little confused. And... We have some added twists and turns in the story: Scarlet, AKA "Little Red Riding Hood," and Wolf - who is big, and bad, very very bad, and so is his pack!

The second book of The Lunar Chronicles does not disappoint!

Comments:
One reviewer wrote, "This is a difficult book to sum up," and that is true. All I can say is the story is written with a sense of magic in the air.

Stiefvater writes with wonderful description and builds stories with tension that keeps me at the edge of my seat. I have enjoyed Stiefvater's books both reading and listening to them. If you can't get into reading one, try listening! This is one of the more beautiful stories I've heard. She has created magic with her storytelling!

Comments:
This book of poems is not for the faint of heart!

It is for those of us with a darker sense of humor. Each page gives you a laugh and some very nice illustrations to accmpany the prose.

I was reminded of the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" series I read when I was younger.

Enjoy!

There are no magical forests in this fairy tale. It is the 1930s in the mid-western US. Callie in the "Dust Bowl" in Kansas. Poverty racism, & secrets are all part of this story. Dust Girl is about two worlds. The first story is of a girl who is hiding the truth about her father and is trying to keep her mother sane, while at the same time trying to keep them both alive. The second is a story of a secret magical world that Callie discovers is just as dark as the world she already knows.

Comments:

I always enjoy it when my favorite fairy tales are given a new twist. Like princes that are not so charming, but rather clumsy. Or a princess who is not quite fair but a bit of a bully. This book is full of adventure and laughs. So sit back and enjoy while four princes charming and a few (fair) princesses try to save their kingdoms!

  • A teenage female assassin who is touch enough to stay alive while being enslaved at a deathcamp/prison.
  • A fierce competition between 23 of the empire's most dangerous criminals.
  • An evil presence (other than the king) that shouldn't even exist.
  • Good triumphing over evil... well maybe.
  • Secrets, intrigue, adventure, love, friendship, and freedom.
