Cassandra Sohn is a freelance photographer and journalist originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She recently moved from New York City to the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, but her career and love of travel take her all over the globe.
Sohn began experimenting with art at a young age, immersing herself in many mediums including drawing, painting and sculpture. She started playing with cameras in her teens, and discovered an immense passion for photography in her early twenties. Her travels and background in the arts play an enormous role in her photographic process. She feels strongly that these explorations have opened many doorways to awareness, compassion and community.
In her fine art work, Sohn presents a query between what we actually see, and how our internal environments influence how we perceive things. Abstract landscapes, movement and blur contribute to the question of what object, identity and place truly are. Sohn captures the way we see moments in our own life - not entirely clear, and often with our present, past and future attached to our perception.
Sohn graduated from the New School in Manhattan with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Photography. She was the main contributing photographer in the recently released book, Window On The Park - New York's Most Prestigious Properties On Central Park, published by Images Publishing. Sohn exhibits with various galleries, and in 2009, had shows with Tappan Z Gallery, in Tarrytown, NY, the Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield, MA, Canyon Ranch and Karendipity Gallery in Lenox, MA, and Dream Studios and Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan. Sohn has worked for a variety of clientele, including Berkshire Living Magazine, Travelraters, Images Publishing and the nonprofit City Harvest; as well as writing for News Photographer Magazine. Sohn presently teaches photography at IS183 Art School in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
